What is a backend?

A backend is the part of an app that runs on servers rather than on the phone. It usually holds accounts and sign-in, a database that syncs data between devices and people, file storage, and logic that must stay private, such as calls to paid services.

More about Backend

Not every app needs one: an app whose data lives on one phone can work without any server. Once people sign in, share data or use the app on more than one device, a backend is needed, and someone has to run it and pay for it.

Backend with Borel

Borel runs the backend for the apps you build: accounts with email and password, a cloud database and file storage, and Borel AI with no API key. Building is paid in credits; running your apps is paid from a separate balance in dollars.
