What is backend as a service (BaaS)?
Backend as a service (BaaS) is a hosted backend an app plugs into instead of running its own servers. The provider offers ready-made parts, such as sign-in, a database, file storage and server functions, through an SDK or API, and looks after hosting, scaling and security updates.
More about Backend as a service (BaaS)
Well-known examples are Firebase and Supabase. The developer still creates the project, writes its access rules, wires the keys into the app and pays the provider as usage grows. Moving to another provider later usually means rewriting the parts of the app that talk to it.
Backend as a service (BaaS) with Borel
With Borel the backend comes built in: your app's accounts, data and files live in a cloud Borel runs, set up as the app is built, with no separate project or keys to manage. Running your app is paid from your Borel balance.
