How the iPhone 18 Pro Max compares
On paper the iPhone 18 Pro Max's screen is the iPhone 17 Pro Max's: the same 6.9-inch panel, the same 2868 × 1320 pixels at 460 ppi, and so the same 440 × 956 points. A layout that fits the 17 Pro Max or the 16 Pro Max fits this phone without a change.
What Apple changed at the top is the Dynamic Island, which it calls redesigned and says can show up to three Live Activities at once. Next to the iPhone Air it is 20 points wider and 44 points taller; next to the iPhone 18 Pro it is 38 points wider and 82 points taller.
What designers need to know
- This is the biggest iPhone canvas: use the extra height for content, not for stretching buttons. A list shows more rows here than on a 6.3-inch phone, and that is fine.
- Keep anything you tap out from under the Dynamic Island. Let SwiftUI's safe area place your content rather than adding a fixed top margin.
- Its 1320 × 2868 screenshot is one of the sizes Apple accepts for the large Dynamic Island group, but Apple's required iPhone size is now the 6.3-inch one.
App Store screenshots
Apple puts the iPhone 18 Pro Max in its iPhone with Dynamic Island (large display) group, which takes 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, 1320 × 2868 pixels in portrait. This group is optional: App Store Connect fills it with scaled copies of another group's screenshots when you skip it.
Build for this screen with Borel
Borel writes iPhone apps in Swift with SwiftUI, whose layouts follow the safe area of whichever iPhone they run on, so one app fits this screen and every other here. You try it in Apple's iOS Simulator in your browser, with no Mac needed.
Frequently asked questions
No. Apple's tech specs give both a 6.9-inch display at 2868 by 1320 pixels and 460 ppi, so apps see the same 440 by 956 points on each.
1320 by 2868 pixels in portrait, or 2868 by 1320 in landscape. Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro Max in its iPhone with Dynamic Island (large display) group.
@3x: every point is three pixels across. Its 1320 pixel wide panel divided by three gives the 440 point width apps lay out in.
Make an app that fits every iPhone
Describe it in plain English. Borel writes it in SwiftUI, runs it on a live iPhone in your browser, and publishes it to the App Store.
