Can ChatGPT make an iPhone app? What works in 2026

ChatGPT can write the Swift code for an iPhone app, but it can't build, run or publish it. What it does well, where it stops, and the shorter way in 2026.

ChatGPT can write an iPhone app's code, but it cannot turn that code into an app on your phone: building, testing, signing and publishing still happen in Xcode on a Mac.

That gap surprises a lot of people. ChatGPT is very good at Swift, and you can ask it for a whole screen of SwiftUI in seconds. But an app is more than code in a chat window. This guide explains what ChatGPT does well for an iPhone app, where it stops, how to use it with Xcode if you have a Mac, and the shorter route if you do not.

What ChatGPT does well for an iPhone app

  • Explaining. What SwiftUI is, why your view does not update, what a provisioning profile does. As a tutor for Apple's tools it is excellent.
  • Writing small pieces. A single screen, a data model, a function that formats a date. Short, self-contained code is where it is most reliable.
  • Planning. Turning an idea into a list of screens and features, or a data model to store.
  • Reading errors. Paste an Xcode error and the code around it, and it will usually tell you what is wrong.
  • Writing store text. A draft of a description, keywords and release notes.

What ChatGPT cannot do on its own

The limits are not about intelligence; they are about where the work has to happen.

  1. It does not compile iPhone apps. An app has to be built against Apple's iOS SDK, which ships inside Xcode on macOS, or for simple apps in Apple's Swift Playground app on an iPad.
  2. It does not run your app. There is no iPhone simulator in a chat. You only find out whether the code works when you build it somewhere else.
  3. It does not keep a project together. A real app is dozens of files. In a chat, you are the one copying each file into the right place and keeping them in step as the conversation goes on.
  4. It does not sign or upload. Installing on a phone needs code signing with your Apple ID, and the App Store needs an upload from Xcode or a build service.
  5. It does not host anything. If the app needs sign-in, a database or AI features, you choose, set up and pay for those services yourself.

OpenAI's coding agent, Codex, goes further for developers: its documentation lists a CLI, an IDE extension and a cloud version alongside ChatGPT. It works on code in a project. It still does not give you Apple's build tools; for an iPhone app those remain on a Mac.

How to make an iPhone app with ChatGPT and Xcode

If you have a Mac, ChatGPT plus Xcode is a real route, and a good way to learn. Here is how it goes:

  1. Install Xcode from the Mac App Store and create a new iOS app project with SwiftUI.
  2. Ask ChatGPT for a plan: the screens, the data and the navigation.
  3. Ask for one file at a time, starting with the data model, then each screen.
  4. Paste each file into Xcode with the right name, then build.
  5. Paste errors back to ChatGPT with the code they point to, and repeat until it builds.
  6. Run it in Xcode's Simulator, then on your iPhone with your Apple ID.
  7. Publish by joining Apple's Developer Program, archiving the app in Xcode and uploading it to App Store Connect.

I'm building a SwiftUI app for iOS 26 that tracks books I've read. Give me only the data model file: a Book with title, author, date finished and a 1-5 rating, saved with SwiftData. Explain where it goes in my Xcode project.

The trick is to keep each request small and to say the iOS version you target, so it uses current APIs.

Where the ChatGPT route gets hard

  • Drift. After a long conversation, new code stops matching the files you pasted earlier, and errors start to multiply.
  • Old answers. Unless you say otherwise, you can get older patterns that compile with warnings or not at all on current Xcode.
  • The error loop. Each build error is a round trip: copy, paste, ask, paste back, build again.
  • Everything around the code. Signing, capabilities, privacy descriptions, icons and the store listing are not code problems, and they take as long as the code.
  • No Mac. On Windows or a Chromebook, the route stops at the code. See Can you make iOS apps on Windows?.

What it costs on each route

Using ChatGPT to write code has its own plan prices on OpenAI's site. The other costs are the same as on any route: a Mac to run Xcode if you build by hand, and Apple's Developer Program at 99 USD a year to publish. On Borel, building starts free with 5 credits a day, the live iPhone is free, and Pro, from $20 a month, adds installing on your iPhone and publishing. Our post on what an iPhone app costs to make lays the routes side by side.

ChatGPT or an AI app builder?

An AI app builder uses a model like the ones behind ChatGPT, but it also owns the project, the build and the testing, so the loop closes without you in the middle.

How to make an iPhone app with Borel, step by step

  1. Sign up at borel.one on any computer. The free plan gives 5 credits a day.
  2. Describe the app in plain words, the way you would to ChatGPT.
  3. Borel writes it in Swift and SwiftUI, and Xcode builds it on Borel's Mac. If Xcode finds an error, Borel reads it and tries to fix it, with no copying and pasting.
  4. Try it on the live iPhone in your browser: tap, scroll and type.
  5. Change it by chatting. Every version is saved, so you can go back.
  6. Put it on your iPhone with Borel Companion, on Pro.
  7. Publish with Pro and Apple's Developer Program: Borel builds, signs and uploads it, and you submit it for review.

Because the code is yours, you can still open it in Xcode later and keep going by hand, or with ChatGPT's help. Our step-by-step guide to making an iPhone app with AI goes deeper.

How to choose

  • You want an app, not a coding project: [Borel](/signup). It writes, builds, runs and publishes, and you never need a Mac.
  • You have a Mac and want to learn Swift: ChatGPT plus Xcode is a good teacher, as long as you keep requests small.
  • You are a developer: a coding agent in your editor, plus Xcode, fits your workflow.
  • You are not sure the idea is worth it: try it free on Borel in an afternoon before committing to anything bigger.

The bottom line

ChatGPT can write a lot of an iPhone app, but it cannot build, run, sign or publish one, so on its own it leaves you with code and a list of jobs that need a Mac. If you want the app itself, describe it to Borel: it writes native Swift, builds it with Xcode on its own Mac, and shows it running on a live iPhone in your browser, free to start.

Questions people ask

Can ChatGPT build an iOS app?

It can write the code, in Swift and SwiftUI. Building it into an app, running it and publishing it need Xcode on a Mac, or a service like Borel that runs Xcode for you.

Can ChatGPT make an app for free?

You can ask ChatGPT for code without paying, but you still need a Mac to build it and Apple's 99 USD a year membership to publish. Borel's free plan gives 5 credits a day and a free live iPhone, with no Mac needed.

Can ChatGPT write Swift code?

Yes, and usually well, especially for small, self-contained pieces. Tell it which iOS version you target so it uses current APIs.

Can I publish an app made with ChatGPT on the App Store?

Yes, if you build it in Xcode, join Apple's Developer Program and pass App Review. Apple does not reject apps for being written with AI; it reviews the app itself, and says it reviews 90% of submissions in under 48 hours.

Do I need a Mac to use ChatGPT for iPhone apps?

To build the code it writes, yes. Without a Mac, an AI app builder that builds on its own Mac is the practical route: see iPhone apps on Windows.

Is Codex better than ChatGPT for iPhone apps?

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent and works on code across a project, which suits developers. For an iPhone app it still needs Apple's tools on a Mac to build and run what it writes.

What is the easiest way to make an iPhone app with AI?

An AI app builder that also builds and runs the app. With Borel you describe it, try it on a live iPhone in your browser, and publish it from the same place.

Can I move my Borel app's code into Xcode and use ChatGPT on it?

Yes. The code is yours: SwiftUI source you can download, with an XcodeGen project.yml to open it in Xcode.

I use AI chat for code too, and it is great at explaining. For a finished iPhone app, I think the build and the phone matter as much as the code, which is why Borel does both.
